Spring Collection Mood Board & Inspiration

I'm so excited for my Spring 2012 collection. I put together a little mood board so you can see my inspirations. I don't usually make mood boards, so this was very fun and new for me. I credited the images where the sources are known.

My collection will be heavily influenced by Dolly Kei, a fashion movement from Japan inspired by fairytales, folklore, vintage romance, and the forest. You can get a great feel for Dolly Kei by reading this article about Grimoire, a boutique in Tokyo that I completely adore.

My jewelry is already pretty much a marriage between Dolly Kei and Steampunk, so for Spring, I am going to fully indulge in these concepts. The color palette will be muted pastels mixed with soft earth tones. A very romantic, antique, and woodsy vibe. Oh, and there will be magical creatures joining us on our stroll through the forest.

Getting Ready for TeslaCon

In a couple of weeks I will be a guest at a steampunk immersion event called TeslaCon. I will be debuting new collections of jewelry inspired by the Lost City of Atlantis, steampunk royalty, and feathers. Quite an eclectic combo, no? Last week I went to vintage & antique clothing/jewelry sale at the MN State Fairgrounds, called The Cat's Pajamas, with my friends Wendy and Morgan. There were so many tantalizing items! Some favorites were authentic Edwardian hats, unicorn cuff links, loads of West German jewelry, and a 1960s polka dot dress. I snapped up a jeweled cuff, half Art Deco, half She-Ra, and 100% magical.

My friend Wendy wore an authentic Edwardian lawn dress and entered in vintage fashion show! I might be a little biased, but I think she should have won.

Guests of the Cats Pajamas vintage sale were asked to wear vintage attire for the event. Using a suede and faux fur coat, I created a look inspired by folk singers and Woodstock. I added a slight steampunk twist with Victorian boots and a heavy duty hardware belt. While perusing the vintage treasures and sipping some wine, Wendy and I were approached by Stephanie Johnson, a local advertising and design student, who has a very cool blog about personal style called Cult Minneapolis. Most of the time, I think street fashion is more interesting than high fashion or runway, because it's expression in it's purest form. I love to see how people choose to represent themselves with clothing and accessories. So as you can imagine, I was delighted when Stephanie asked to photograph me for her blog!

Stephanie plans to add more photos from the vintage sale to her blog. I'm excited to see pics of all the outfits people wore to the show, as I was only there for the last hour of the event.

I recently had the absolute delight of working with Lillyxandra, the brilliantly creative pixie responsible for the amazing designs of Firefly Path. I have been a long time fan, so imagine my happiness when she responded to my email saying she'd like to wear my jewelry. Wow! I designed jewelry to complement her newest design, a black and red Rococo inspired ball gown. Nim Lang Jewelry Copies Bionic Unicorn

Nim Lang is copying my jewelry and doesn't want you to know. I'm very sad to say that I'm having problems with copyright infringement. A jewelry designer by the name of Nim Lang has been copying my work and selling it. Nim Lang has already admitted in writing to copying me, and continues to try to sell her jewelry on different websites, thinking I won't notice. I have asked her kindly to stop and I have reported her to the websites she sells at.

She is copying my work and insisting that it is a tribute. Some of the designs that Nim Lang has copied have been my intellectual property since 2009. Supporting handmade jewelry is a beautiful thing, and intellectual property must be protected.

The above photo is a comparison of Bionic Unicorn Jewelry and Nim Lang Jewelry. I want you to be able to see for yourself, and I welcome any and all comments. However, I ask that no one contact her with any negative messages. I merely want to warn my customers and urge the steampunk community to take a stand against copyright infringement. The best action that can be taken is simply to not buy jewelry, art, literature, or whatever from people who copy. This is in order to preserve artistic integrity and better the handmade community.

To clarify, I do not feel that I am the only one who should be able to make steampunk butterfly necklaces and steampunk jewelry involving flowers. I am happy that my jewelry inspires people. There is a big difference between being inspired and making paint by number copies of originals that were made with integrity and love.

This issue hurts me greatly and I hope it will end soon.

Hi everyone! My name is Alexis, and I am Kristin’s assistant. I’m here updating my first ever blog post to inform you all of the exciting upcoming MN Fashion Week events which will be featuring the jewelry of Bionic Unicorn!

Envision –April 9th, Graves 601 Hotel

Bionic Unicorn’s designs will be paired on the runway with the vintage style fashions of Jenny Carle. Kristin’s collection, Tribe of Flowers, features a blend of beautiful floral and tribal aesthetic, and fits perfectly with either trend. Her pieces in this collection consist of dainty enamel flowers mixed with chain fringe. The above photo is a gorgeous necklace included in the collection and can be found here! Voltage –April 15th, First Avenue

The collection Hallucination at the County Fair is debuting with the designs of Max Lohrbach, the finale designer of the lineup. The collection is punk-rock romantic revolutionary style, which Kristin says, is inspired by "kitties and princesses!” The event will also have a pop-up boutique selling items from this collection. Be sure to get your tickets soon, this event will sell out!

The Secret Garden – April 16th, Suburban World Theater

Secrets Fashion Agency introduces this Alice in Wonderland themed event. Kristin will be showing her Evocation collection with Tony Eliason’s designs. Her new collection is described as a mix of neo Victorian glamour with aesthetics from the 80’s and 90’s. She says it's "neo Victorian meets retro tribal". This is another Bionic Unicorn collection that will be shown for the first time, so don't miss it!

It's True

It's true. I suck a updating my blog regularly. But not anymore! I will do a much better job from now on, I promise! So now from some randomness from my bionic world, and tomorrow begins structured and meaningful blog posting!

The above pictured necklace is available here. It's called Desert Runner. The necklace features a vintage hand painted roadrunner, a vintage pocket watch face circa 1940, and vintage lucite beads from West Germany. I love the mix of southwestern style and steampunk. I like to imagine that someone found part of a pocket watch in the desert and used it to create a necklace inspired by the elements around them.

Yesterday I worked on a plethora of chain maille for Voltage, which is coming up on April 15. I will be posting a full rundown of my spring fashion events tomorrow. Today, I might work on some chain maille if my eyes can handle it. If not, I will be working on new pieces for my Etsy shop, like wooden butterflies and jewelry for those under the sign Aries.

I am happy to say that I am included in the multitude of people who love Lanvin. Alber Elbaz is a genius. I hope to some day own a dress that he designed. I especially love the new line of jewelry inspired by insects for Lanvin's spring 2011 collection. In fact, they remind me a little of some of the butterfly necklaces that I have made. The top image in this posting is a Lanvin necklace. The other three are Bionic Unicorn. They have obvious differences, but the spirit and mechanical references in each piece are concurrent. I have recently been inspired to make more of my signature butterfly jewelry, so you can expect to see more in my Etsy shop very soon!

Avoid the Grey Photos and Recap

Here's some looks from Avoid the Grey, a fashion show produced by Cliche, a boutique in Minneapolis where I sell my jewelry. You can click on each panel of pics for a larger view. Featured here are clothing designs by Niki English, Ashley Busch, Jenny Carle, and Sydney Ilten. The night went by so fast, probably because it was so much fun.

I was joined at the 3:00 show by my mother and my aunt. It was their first fashion show and they loved it. My lovely friends Wendy and Morgan sat front row with us. After the show, we jetted off to Bar La Grassa where we enjoyed grilled prawns and delicious cocktails. I horrified my mother by ordering the Pasta Negra, which consists of noodles that had been soaked in squid ink - thus making them very dark in color. My aunt Mary was brave enough to try it and agreed that it was delicious. My mother still recoiled.

Next up it was time for the 7:00 show. My friends Soren and Erica each brought their lovely young daughters who were very intrigued by the runway show. They even got a backstage peak when the show was over. I sense some budding designers in our midst. My fellow jewelry designers, the fabulous Timmi Lynn Johnson and ever effervescent Tasha Rae Tatro took up eagle's nest seats in the back row. It was wonderful to enjoy the show together and check out the glittering fruits of our labors.

I had barely enough time to grab a drink before the 9:30 show started. I was happy to catch up with Mary O'Regan, Jahna Peloquin, and Emma Berg, all I might add were looking gorgeous as usual. I was delighted that Mary and Jahna were each wearing some of my jewelry. After the show, Mary and I ventured out to the Kitty Cat Klub with Molly Roark. It was so busy there I probably wouldn't have gotten a drink if it weren't for Molly's cunning wiles. There were several gents in capes who were dressed up for Menergy's dance night. I suddenly wished that I had a silver tiara and some wrist cuffs.

Spring 2011 Preview

This spring I am designing four collections (maybe more, I'm not sure yet). Here is a preview of two of them! I will be debuting both collections at Avoid the Grey next Saturday. Avoid the Grey is an annual fashion show produced by my favorite uptown Minneapolis boutique, Cliché.

First is "Tribe of Flowers", a jewelry collection featuring hybrid styles of Art Deco, Egyptian Revival, and Tribal. This collection has a color palette of gold, black, red, pink, and light blue. I can see Tribe of Flowers being so versatile - with a maxi dress or even your favorite cargo pants. Some statement necklaces in this collection are one of a kind, and feature chain maille and large Art Deco brass panels. Tribe of Flowers will be shown with Sydney Ilten's designs in the floral segment of Avoid the Grey.

The other collection I will be showing at Avoid the Grey is called Pure Etherea. This collection is inspired by mod fashion from the 1960s, futurism, intelligence, and optimism. It also reminds me of Bond Girls. I used light tones of silver and gold mixed with vintage plastics in clear and opaque white. A few pieces include chandelier crystals, white jade, and organic resin. The clarity provided by a lack of color palette makes me think of a sharp mind that looks towards the future with hope and happiness. Pure Etherea will be shown with Jenny Carle's designs in the mod segment of Avoid the Grey. You can also see a few pieces from this collection in the Spring/Summer issue of MN Bride magazine.

SCENEaSOTA 2010 will be a dynamic experience for attendees. On top of amazing fashion from both emerging and veteran Twin Cities designers, the event will offer a pre-show reception that includes drink specials, appetizers, DJs, a meet and greet with the designers and a sneak preview of the art work featured in the space. The party continues after the runway with DJs and dancing.

This is a 21+ event. Doors open at 8pm Show begins at 9:30pm

Celebrity Dream Clients

I was once asked who was on my celebrity wishlist of clients to work with. I thought it would be fun to make a little gallery of my favorite ladies and talk about why I admire them. Plus you never know, the universe might grant my wish! While making this little gallery, I realized that their names either start with A or Z, and are very similar. Quelle coincidence!

Anna Paquin: Other than the obvious fact that she is the star of my favorite show, I love her unique beauty. I think the gap in her teeth is so cute, and I love her adventurous personality. She seems like the kind of person who could conquer anything she wanted.

Alexa Chung: Coolest personal style. I love how she mixes high and low fashion. She is the queen of perfect bed head hair. Alexa always comes across as chic, casual, and modern. She seems very intelligent and down to earth - and I love watching her interview people.

Zoë Saldana: I have been a fan ever since she was a bitchy ballerina in Center Stage. To me, she embodies modern feminine power. Plus, she has a long regal neck perfect for giant statement jewelry!

Zooey Deschanel: Is there a cuter person in the world? I'm not sure. Her innocent blue eyes combined with her quirky attitude make her a truly magical person. I love her vintage inspired personal style.

This weekend my jewelry will be for sale in the "Bringing Fancy Back" Boutique at Anime Weekend Atlanta. I have new cameo necklaces, lolita rings, carousel earrings, and select steampunk necklaces. You may be wondering, "What are these 'things' she is talking about"? The thingies are whatever quality or ability each person wants to be recognized for. I think that the need for validation is one of the biggest motives that propels humanity. Everyone just wants to be recognized for what they think they are good at. If you haven't noticed it yet, watch for it during your next social interaction. This simple desire is at the bottom of almost any conversation. There's nothing wrong with it either. Everyone wants to feel appreciated in some way. I think the world would be a lot happier in general if we could all just take a moment to validate each other so we can get on with whatever else is going on. And I mean that in a very positive way.

If I had the means, I would throw a gigantic party where you could all be my guests and dress up in outlandish outfits. We could enjoy dance hits of the 80s while sipping beverages of various flavors. I am a non-believer of exclusivity, so there would be no list. Everyone is invited!

Alas, I have not the means for such an event, so on to more realistic news...

My current mission is to provide you with eclectic and affordable jewelry. I am working in a dedicated fashion to create new and exciting jewelry styles for $40 and less. I'll still be making big elaborate items, but it's time to focus on budget friendly pieces as well.

On to more random tidbits... I have a hot pink electric guitar that I haven't played in ages. I got caught up in creating artwork, but now I want to re-teach myself to play it. The best I can do right now is the theme song from Peter Gunn. This guitar deserves better. It's a Charvel Predator. Rawr.

Featured above is one of my new designs, Tinkerbell's Secret Garden.

This necklace represents wild and untamed femininity, just like Tinkerbell. I imagine she needed a secret blooming retreat to hide in while nursing hurt feelings over Peter and Wendy. This necklace is my ode to Tinkerbell, and wild pixies everywhere.

I had so much fun making this necklace. The pendant features enamel flowers in periwinkle, apple green, lavender, and sky blue. Antique balance cocks from watches as late as 1875 protrude from the flower bed like creeping legs of insects. A gorgeous gold swirling gear glows hypnotically as it's warm tones are reflected in an amber vintage rhinestone. The necklace earns it's fairy wings by hosting a repurposed vintage leaf broach. The leaf is textured green enamel with small aqua blossoms. The other side of the necklace is accented asymmetrically with iridescent rainbow vitrail glass jewels. A vintage verdigris pocket watch charm descends from the pendant, glowing with an assemblage of pastel enamel flowers. The necklace is completed with vintage dusky plum enamel chain.

Skullduggery and Elemental Flowers

Here's a sneak peak at some of my new midsummer designs!

I wanted to save you some time, so I piled on all my new designs at once. I started doing my own enameling, so you can expect vivid colors and twilight inspired gradients. I have custom distressed skulls looking cute and deadly on mint condition flowers from the 1960s. Vintage West German glass zodiac charms are set into rustic and colorful pendants. These pieces will transition beautifully into fall with a playful sense of gothic beauty.

I have new steampunk designs as well. Here's a feature of Time Travel of the Heart, a romantic pink and white flying machine statement necklace.

A vintage porcelain pocket watch face from Atlas Watch Company is the centerpiece of this whimsical necklace. The watch face is adorned with silver clock hands in a radial star like pattern. The star burst is topped with a jeweled pink plastic flower. Vintage blossoms in pink enamel and white lucite accent the upper corners of the pendant and add flourish to the soft angel wings on either side. The angel wings are created with vintage soft plastic wings from the 1960s.

I also recently learned that the US Navy is using a sonar device that is causing brain hemorrhages in dolphins, whales, and other creates that use sonar to communicate. When the US government was confronted about this, the response was that national security is more important. I completely disagree. We need to protect these animals from being endangered. I'm sure the Navy is smart enough to come up with something that won't kill dolphins and whales, and they are welcome to use my tax dollars to pay for it.

The Funny Names of Flowers

I'm really inspired by wildflowers right now, and I am making jewelry that looks like old machines overtaken by vines and flowers.

I like to research kinds of flowers before naming each jewelry piece. I've found so many beautiful flowers, but their names are just terrible!

Would you be intrigued by a necklace named Milk Vetch? I wouldn't, and it's so sad because Milk Vetch is a really beautiful flower. Milk Vetch sounds like what happens to someone who is lactose intolerant.

Then there is Hepatica. A gorgeous flower, but the name sounds like a venereal disease.

I've been finding flowers with cooler sounding names, but they are still not right for jewelry. Like Rattlesnake Master. Not something you want to wear on your neck, but it would look great on a business card.

Blue Flowers

I am totally in to blue flowers. They have been a recent theme in my jewelry. I decided to do some research on blue flowers to learn more about the names of each species. I then discovered that the blue flower is the symbol of German Romanticism. This is very thrilling to me, as I find it serendipitous. I am very inspired by Bavarian style, as well as fairy tales. Now I am enamored with blue flowers, and I will be featuring the theme in many of my upcoming pieces.

Here is my darling friend Lucy, wearing the Secret of Night necklace, which features blue and purple flowers. This necklace really reflects Lucy's sweet personality.

Random Picture of the Day!

I was once convinced that 'Pink Death Star" was an original idea. Then I found out that it's also a band when I googled it. I found a really cool picture in the process though, and I have asked my husband to go as "Pink Darth Vader" for Halloween this year.

So today at the gas station I heard a big crunch. I turned around and someone in an SVU drove right into a snowbank at the side of the alley. They weren't even going that fast. I think they thought they could take the snowbank and ram right through it. But instead it made a terrible scratching noise and they had to back up to get out.

In other news, my love for making sculptural necklaces is growing, and I am currently working on a jungle orchid piece, as well as some bird themes. And I have some other top secret creations in line for spring. Spring is the best season to design for. It's so optimistic.

I realize that I haven't written anything for a while. Since I'm fresh out of snarky comments, I decided to host a little gallery collection of all of the treasuries I have been in on Etsy. It's always a wonderful surprise to see one of my items featured, and I save a screen shot each time.

I am now currently obsessed with re-inventing steampunk jewelry. My version is colorful, feminine, and full of life. I really love how I can create my own little landscapes with watch gears and movements. The bug is catchy - my husband has even started making his own creations.

I had 6 sales in the last 2 days. Thank you to all of my fabulous customers!

I'm starting some new pieces this weekend - one is gold with purple cat's eye beads. It's very fancy and sweet.

Ryan and I are going to try to make some steampunk stuff, since it's the coolest thing ever. I have custom dipped enamel flowers coming my way that will be the focal point of some of the pieces.

I also have some very exciting vintage plastic faceted charms that are bursting with fruit flavor. You can expect many colorful things popping up in my shop.

Good Day to You! It's a Good Day for Me!

Today I went to vote and it was really awesome. I went right when the polls opened, but it seemed that everyone in my ward had the same idea, as they were lined up along the block. I immediately wished that I had brought something to do. Fortunately, I got to stand next to some really nice people, so we just chatted the whole time and I was up to the front of the line in no time! Then when I am going to get my ballot, I find out that I read the map wrong and that voting for my ward is on the other side of the building, which of course had it's own excrutiatingly long line. Lucky for me, one of the voting judges put me at the front of the other line and explained what happened to the other people waiting. No one around me minded. Something about voting had brought out the nicest qualities in everyone. I think that they were all just really excited about getting rid of Bush, myself included.
Now I get to hang out with my adorable baby and my dog until I go to work today.
